Seminario intensivo 2025: Ceramic Furniture dictado por Austin Coudriet

Austin Coudriet nació y creció en Lincoln, Nebraska. En 2019 obtuvo su Licenciatura en Bellas
Artes con énfasis en escultura y cerámica en la Universidad de Nebraska-Lincoln. Allí se centró
en la fabricación de grandes esculturas de cerámica y en ampliar sus habilidades en el taller de
carpintería.
Actualmente, Austin es artista residente de larga duración en la Archie Bray Foundation for the
Ceramic Arts, ubicada en Helena, Montana. Aquí puede seguir sus pasiones de enseñar y
trabajar como artista de estudio. Divide su práctica de estudio entre la creación de esculturas
orientadas al diseño, muebles de cerámica y vasijas hechas a mano.
Austin ha realizado varias residencias, la más reciente fue artista residente de larga duración en
el Clay Studio of Missoula en Missoula, Montana (2021-2023). En 2021, Austin completó una
residencia de dos años en el Clay Art Center en Port Chester, Nueva York. Allí, ayudó a hacer
crecer el estudio comunitario: encendiendo hornos, mezclando esmaltes, trabajando en la
galería, realizando talleres y conferencias y realizando mantenimiento de rutina en el equipo del
estudio. Durante el comienzo de la pandemia, Austin se mudó de nuevo a Nebraska durante
seis meses, donde le ofrecieron un puesto de becario en el LUX Center for the Arts y renovó el
espacio de su galería.
Austin ayudó a fundar un grupo colectivo de cerámica llamado Mud Ties en 2019.
Actualmente, dirige tanto el equipo de divulgación social como el de redes sociales.

PROGRAMA:
Día 1
Presentación, diseño, maquetación y preparaciones para la construcción.
Presentación del trabajo de Austin, sistemas de estructura interna y contracción de placas.Se proporcionan
imágenes de mesas y opciones de diseño. Los participantes dibujan entre 5 y 7 diseños. Austin hablará sobre qué mesas serán las más exitosas para quienes fabrican mesas por primera vez. Trabajaremos una hora esculpiendo rápidamente 2 o 3 de los diseños dibujados en miniatura / maquetas. Austin hablará sobre esta experiencia del taller y sobre la diferencia entre conservar la mesa y conservar la maqueta y aprender el proceso. Inicio de las mesas: losas de base y construcción por rollos / lulos. Austin dará instrucciones sobre los métodos de construcción adecuados (cómo se debe construir cada mesa); mostrará la mejor manera de aplanar y comprimir las placas para evitar que se deformen, se hundan y se agrieten, cómo hacer los rollos / lulos y cómo incorporarlos para lograr una resistencia óptima y maximizar la eficiencia del tiempo.

Día 2
Fabricación de la mesa.
Día principal de construcción. Austin dará instrucciones sobre los soportes internos y se asegurará de que todas las mesas tengan los soportes adecuados en los lugares apropiados. Compresión y construcción de rollos/lulos. Veremos las formas de cómo cerrar la mesa y cómo voltearla. Refinar las maquetas si los estudiantes desean conservarlas.

Día 3
Superficie de la mesa, acabados, finalización, secado, cocción, charla sobre el acabado de la superficie.
Acabados de las mesas, cerrar las aberturas. Voltear las mesas cuando estén listas. Austin dará instrucciones sobre el alisado y/o la textura de la superficie. Proceso de secado: hablaremos sobre cómo secar una pieza con éxito y preparar las piezas para el secado, los programas de cocción en horno y las opciones de acabado de la superficie para muebles grandes.

Austin Coudriet

Austin Coudriet was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 2019, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture and ceramics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. There, he focused on creating large ceramic sculptures and expanding his skills in the woodworking shop.
Currently, Austin is a long-term resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, located in Helena, Montana. Here, he is able to pursue his passions of teaching and working as a studio artist. He divides his studio practice between creating design-oriented sculptures, ceramic furniture, and hand-built vessels.
Austin has completed several residencies, the most recent being a long-term resident artist at the Clay Studio of Missoula in Missoula, Montana (2021-2023). In 2021, Austin completed a two-year residency at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York. There, he helped grow the community studio: firing kilns, mixing glazes, working in the gallery, conducting workshops and lectures, and performing routine maintenance on studio equipment. During the beginning of the pandemic, Austin moved back to Nebraska for six months, where he was offered a fellowship position at the LUX Center for the Arts and renovated their gallery space.
Austin helped found a ceramic collective group called Mud Ties in 2019. He currently leads both the social outreach and social media teams.

PROGRAM:
Day 1
Introduction, design, layout, and preparations for construction.
Presentation of Austin's work, internal structure systems, and slab shrinkage. Images of tables and design options are provided. Participants draw between 5 and 7 designs. Austin will discuss which tables will be the most successful for those making tables for the first time. We will work for an hour quickly sculpting 2 or 3 of the drawn designs in miniature/mock-ups. Austin will talk about this workshop experience and the difference between keeping the table and keeping the mock-up and learning the process. Start of the tables: base slabs and coil construction. Austin will provide instructions on proper construction methods (how each table should be built); he will show the best way to flatten and compress the slabs to prevent warping, sagging, and cracking, how to make the coils, and how to incorporate them to achieve optimal strength and maximize time efficiency.

Day 2
Table fabrication.
Main construction day. Austin will provide instructions on internal supports and ensure that all tables have the proper supports in the appropriate places. Compression and coil construction. We will see how to close the table and how to flip it. Refine the mock-ups if students wish to keep them.

Day 3
Table surface, finishes, completion, drying, firing, and discussion on surface finishes.
Finishing the tables, closing the openings. Flip the tables when they are ready. Austin will provide instructions on smoothing and/or texturing the surface. Drying process: we will discuss how to successfully dry a piece and prepare the pieces for drying, kiln firing schedules, and surface finish options for large furniture.
